Discussion: Democrats Fret That Obama Will Choose Nonpartisan GOTV Over Campaign Trail

“Obama has always been a closeted republican” Sarcasm or delusion?

Try ‘reality’. And you can find all the testimonials you need to support this on the mahogany walls of Wall Street’s banks and investment houses.

Even before that, with the likes of Joe Lieberman and Max Baucus in the Senate, he was forced to toe a more moderate line.

You couldn’t be more wrong, I am in my house today because of President Obama. " Keep Your Home California" was a federally funded program, I.E the Obama administration, that banks that received bail out funds were obligated to participate in. Under KYHC, if you lost your job and qualified for unemployment, KYHC would pay your mortgage for up to a year. A lien would be filed against your home in the amount of mortgage payments made, If you stayed in your home 3 years after the last payment was made, the loan was forgiven. My mortgage was paid for 4 months under this program when the company I was with failed in 2010. Without this program, my family would likely have been forced out of our home. Needless to say, I take strong exception to these kinds of baseless assertions.

We’ll…he’s not running for office this time and he certainly has figured out that R candidates and office holders are not humanitarians. Voters are a different matter. Dems not only need to band together and get their asses to the polls in huge numbers but it is a fool’s errand to not at least try to peel off some R voters who are, even if secretly, appalled at trump. Dem POTUS winner can use that power when they get there, but they have to get there first. And to continue to divide the country is not in the county’s best interest.

Michael Avenatti gave a pretty good speech the other night at the protest in front of the WH. You can find it on his Twitter Page. Check it out.

Oh come on people: Bill Clinton was more of a conservative Republican than baby Bush…Clinton did more to setback the working poor and middle class and brown skin toned Americans than any Republican. Remember Clinton’s don’t ask don’t tell, Remember Clinton’s 3 strikes and you are out, remember Clinton’s 1999 banking modernization act (repeal of Glass-Steagall), remember Clinton’s NAFTA job exporting trade act, remember Clinton’s welfare reform that was right out of the Reagan playbook, and on and on it goes.

Oh come on people: Barak Obama from day one opposed reinstalling Glass-Steagall banking regulations following the 2007-08 Bush Financial Collapse, Obama didn’t order Guantanamo closed, Obama did not end the occupation of Iraq or the wasteful war in Afghanistan, Obama made the 2 giant Bush tax cuts for the rich permanent, Obama did not fight for his Supreme court pick…he could have appointed Garland and tested McConnell’s obstruction in the courts and he failed to do that, Obama opposed single payer healthcare and left the insurance companies in charge, Obama did little on climate change as he originated clean coal and allowed fracking to double during his years in office.

Come on people: the Clinton-Obama establishment are Demopublicans…NOT Democrats!

Facts are facts. I had high hopes for Obama but they were dashed even before he was elected by his vote to grant immunity to the AT&T. Convince me otherwise, please tell me about all the progressive causes Obama championed.

passed the $787 Billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that
stopped in its tracks the massive monthly job losses.
Joined the Paris Agreement
Ended combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Drones were a partial reason he was able to this,
Repealed don’t ask, don’t tell
Shored up Medicare
Protected DREAMERS from deportation
Net Neutrality
Sotomayor and Kagan
Kicked Banks out of the Student Loan Business
Passed the fair sentencing act
Revived a moribund Civil Rights Division
Kick started clean energy investment
Cut Veteran Homelessness in half
Lily Ledbetter act

I could go on, but I don’t have to. Google Obama’s progressive achievements and you will find dozens and dozens of progressive achievements, If your base accusation is that he was a capitalist and not a communist or socialist, well yeah.

Your good fortune does not mean others’ misfortunes were merely ‘baseless assertions.’
Happy for you and family but tell it to the other nine million families or so who lost their homes. Keep You Home California was a creative and successful state-supported program but Obama’s national Home Affordable Modification Program, or HAMP, was dismal failure. Obama admitted as much saying we have to go back to the drawing board. Meanwhile, those responsible for the GR got to keep their summer homes.

It is very doubtful that she needs to get involved in advocating a particular person. As long as she is pushing voting, people will get the idea and she doesn’t need to hit them on the head with a club to get her point across. Just having her up there telling people to vote is enough to give them an idea of who the better person to vote for is.

I thought the topic of this article was dumb, until I read some of the comments on it.

Good god almighty, go back to Firedoglake.

The assertion was that Obama cared more about bankers than people losing their home.

Obama took over a disaster in January 2009. Many people lost their homes because it took awhile to get these programs in place.

Also, quite frankly there were many people who had interest only loans with balloon payments and adjustable rate mortgages that were the product of a predatory loans long before Obama took office.

At the end of the day, yes, everything he did didn’t work.

But if you sincerely believe that Obama cared more about the bankers than people losing their home, then yes, we have a deep disagreement.

You hit the nail on the head @trumpdog and @valgalky23 Please don’t be fooled by this non-issue, @imkmu3.

The original Politico story is amazingly bogus. In its lede, it nonsensically asserts that Democrats are “frustrated” over a high-profile effort by one of the most popular women in America that’s sure to get more young people and minorities to the polls. In the next 20 or so paragraphs, the writer fails to back that claim up with a single quote from a single source — neither on nor off the record.

Maybe, there was some irrelevant someone who drunkenly mentioned this concern to a reporter. Maybe the editor just added the line to the lede to give it that distinctive Politico spin. Whatever. But all the actual evidence presented in the story demonstrates widespread enthusiasm for her effort. Then, TPM amplifies Politico’s unsubstantiated lede by placing “fret” in its own headline.

This is how the false “Democrats in disarray” narrative lives on despite: record-setting fundraising, an endless stream of good polls, a widening generic ballot advantage, a great deal of unity on progressive ideas, and the deepest field of high-quality challengers that we’ve seen in any of our lifetimes (and if you actually look at the contests you’ll see that am not exaggerating).

We are doing very, very well. The question at this point is what we can do to protect and extend our lead (we need to win the Senate in addition to the House). The answer is to do whatever we can to keep that discord bubbling among the GOP, and to do everything we can to unify our side around things like GOTV and strategic candidate contributions.

“We’re worried about what kind of campaigning a former first lady might decide to do” is simply a silly story on its face.

FTR -

O didn’t have the power to “order Guantanamo closed” because previous Senate votes made it a mandatory Senatorial prerogative if/when to close it; most of the people on this site will remember that O tried to get the votes he needed but faced bipartisan resistance.

Whatabouters, whatabouting. As always at the mention of the name Obama.

Yes, he did. The last combat troops were withdrawn in 2011, per the Status of Forces agreement. The US re-entered in 2014 at the request of the Iraqi government to support combat operations against ISIL.

I think he truly cared and was greatly conflicted but at the end of the day he sided with the bankers. The opportunity for greatness was within his grasp but he wasn’t up to the task. It was the defining moment in his presidency, IMO.

I understand not liking partisan politics. But we simply don’t have the luxury of pretending we live in a world where we can ignore the partisan aspect of the job ahead of us. Getting this country back on track - if that’s even possible at this point, and I have serious doubts that it is - will by its very nature be a partisan project, and it’s disappointing AF that Michelle Obama refuses to see that.
